Moving away from children’s drama, Nigel then directed Eastenders which included 2 notable episodes ; the night Bianca discovered David Wickes was her father and the introduction of Barbara Windsor. After this he went back to BBC Children’s drama to direct major new series “The Biz” – The British version of “fame” starring Paul Nicholls. In the mid nineties, he went on to direct the first series of the seminal contemporary drama THIS LIFE which won BAFTA for best drama.
In great demand after this. Nigel directed several major episodes of BBC series CASUALTY including the ninety minute Christmas special which was again recognised by BAFTA. Developing an interest and skill for action films, he went on to direct 8 episodes ITV’s major series London’s Burning. During this time, Nigel was much sought after in the corporate and commercial marketplace where he produced, directed and wrote several successful projects for many companies including Watershed Pictures, Cosmopolitan magazine and various record companies. This in turn led to the creation of corporate specialist production company Spearhead Productions with which as Managing Director he led to considerable financial success.
In 1999, he teamed up with ex Eastender’s producer Alison Davis to make a major ITV two part psychological drama called The Blind date starring Ben Miller. This went on to win many awards including “Best film” at the Rheims film festival.
This was followed by TV movie “The Knock” filmed in Ghana with Rick Mayall before he and Alison Davis worked together again on a major Channel 4 series called North Square starring Phil Davies, Rupert Penry Jones and Kevin McKidd. This ground breaking series led to Clocking off starring Mark Warren, David Morissey and Sophie Okenado which once more won an award from BAFTA. Staying in Manchester, Nigel then directed all 6 episodes of comedy drama Stan the Man for Granada starring John Thomson and Gaynor Faye.
Nigel continued to write alongside his directing career with new screenplays No Mans Land set at the end of the first world war and The Lying Game, a dark comedy set in an advertising company.
Returning to London, Nigel then directed the movie length special of Bad Girls for ITV before being asked to set up a major new BBC series called Holby City. After overseeing the launch of this popular drama, Nigel continued at the BBC with The Inspector Lynley mysteries starring Nat Parker. He then directed another new series for Carlton Tv about The Royal Navy entitled Making Waves starring Joanna Page.
Nigel continued to write and direct films outside of his broadcast work with his short film HUNTER winning awards globally including the New York film Festival, The Cinema du Paris film festival and the Los Angeles film festival. He also wrote the screenplay Dafina for Atlantic pictures which is currently in development.
In 2007 Nigel travelled to South Africa to direct the first 3 episodes of ITV’s Wild at Heart starring Stephen Tompkinson and Amanda Holden which he did again in 2008.
2009 saw the creation of a new production company Nitro Media Ltd specialising in corporate and educational video and website media. This was formed with new media and web design expert Robin Tucker from Moragan Design Ltd. Nigel produces and directs many of the company’s projects.
In 2011, Nigel will write and direct a major new feature film entitled “About Her”. He also launches a global training course for screen acting.
